Boo Boo the 6 year old Pomeranian had a history of a collapse event while on the beach, upper respiratory stertor, & snoring Zzzz which began 3 years ago.
Boo Boo’s mom mentioned that he would wake up in the middle of the night & described signs of sleep apnea.
Boo Boo presented to us with anxiety & improved shortly after mild sedation (butorphanol & acepromazine) that were provided in the hospital.
Boo Boo’s x-rays revealed laxity & collapse of the pharynx & trachea & equivocal thickening of the soft palate.
We discussed a CT scan versus a sedated oral exam as the next diagnostic steps.
Much to our surprise, we were able to confirm an elongated soft palate that required surgical correction.
An elongated soft palate is much less common in pomeranians as they do not fall within the “extreme brachycephalic breeds” such as the french bulldog, english bulldog, or pug.
Regardless, we are happy to report that Boo Boo is already living a better life & breathing much more easily at home !
