Though Cavaliers don’t have the extremely shortened skull typical of brachycephalic breeds, some can have a moderately short muzzle that can cause similar airway issues.
Cavaliers may be prone to:
1. Elongated Soft Palate:
This can interfere with breathing, especially when they are excited or exercising.
2. Snoring & Noisy Breathing:
This can sometimes be confused with BOAS. If a Cavalier has these symptoms, a veterinarian should evaluate the cause, which could be due to an elongated soft palate or another airway issue.
3. Heat Intolerance:
Dogs with any respiratory compromise, including those with moderate brachycephalic features, can be more sensitive to heat & overexertion, which can make breathing difficulties worse.
Signs to Watch For:
• Loud or noisy breathing (even at rest)
• Snoring
• Gagging or retching
• Difficulty breathing after exercise
• Intolerance to heat or exercise
Treatment & Management:
If a Cavalier is found to have airway issues like an elongated soft palate or narrow nostrils, surgery may be needed to correct the problem.
In general, careful management of their weight, avoiding excessive exercise in hot weather, & ensuring they do not become overheated can help reduce the risk of respiratory distress.
If you are concerned that your Cavalier might have any of these symptoms, it’s important to consult a veterinarian for a thorough examination.
