When we see inside the throat we are supposed to see their AIRWAY ENTRANCE (where we place the endotracheal tube that provides oxygen) but this is CHALLENGING in EXTREME BRACHYCEPHALIC BREEDS due to ELONGATED SOFT PALATE.
The SOFT PALATE = soft part in the back of the roof of your dog’s mouth that separates the nasal nose passages from the mouth
The SOFT PALATE SHOULD NEVER HANG in the throat in front of the windpipe (trachea) lungs
Imagine living with & Blocked Windpipe lungs ?
In FLAT FACED dogs PANTING causes SWELLING which leads to BREATHING lungs ISSUES & RESPIRATORY DISTRESS.
Too many FLAT FACED dog STRUGGLE to BREATHE lungs on a DAILY BASIS thumb down
@drboazman explains that those adorable SMUSHED faced dog paw (Pugs, English Bulldogs, & Frenchies) all have something in common: they are #BRACHYCEPHALIC BREEDS
These breeds possess the flat face, pushed-up nose, narrow nostrils, & large see .
Unfortunately, because of this peculiar anatomy, brachycephalic dogs often have a hard time breathing & have respiratory lungs abnormalities.
This condition is known as brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome BOAS & it is characterized by index pointing or more of the following:
An elongated soft palate
Stenotic nares
Everted Laryngeal Saccules
A narrow trachea
Ever notice that Bulldogs do a lot of Zzz snorting? That’s probably due to an elongated soft palate.
Stenotic nares is the term referring to narrowing of the nostrils. This limits the airflow, making breathing through the nose difficult. When the nostrils are narrow corrective surgery helps patients to breathe better.
