An Elongated Soft Palate is like a Cork in a Bottle, eliminating Airflow in the throat ! Laser surgery is an optimal surgical tool for this type of soft tissue surgery & is commonly performed in brachycephalic (short-nosed) dog breeds like French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs, & Pugs.

This condition, known as elongated soft palate (ESP), occurs when the soft palate extends too far into the airway, causing breathing difficulties, snoring, gagging, hyperthermia, respiratory distress, laryngeal collapse, & life threatening irreversible changes.

Surgical Procedure

The surgery, called a staphylectomy or soft palate resection, is best performed at an early age & involves:

1. Anesthesia: The dog is placed under general anesthesia.

2. Trimming the Excess Tissue: The veterinarian carefully trims the elongated portion of the soft palate using a surgical CO2 laser. Advantages of laser include no sutures, minimal bleeding, easy visualization of airways, less pain, less swelling, minimal tissue trauma, & smoother recovery with less complications.

3. Recovery: The dog is monitored for swelling or respiratory complications.

Recovery & Post-Op Care

Most dogs stay for a few hours in an exam room with pet parents to help with an appropriate recovery.

Pain Management & Anti-Inflammatory Medications:

To reduce discomfort & inflammation.

Prognosis

Most dogs experience significant improvement in breathing, daily activity, reduced snoring, & better exercise tolerance.

Risks include swelling (which can temporarily worsen breathing), bleeding, & in some cases, aspiration pneumonia.

In severe cases, a temporary tracheostomy (tube placed in the neck) & supportive care at an ER may be needed if swelling blocks the airway.
